September 24: Mose Scarlett
Entertaining blend of blues, jazz, ragtime, swing and 'Tin Pan Alley treasures'
A 40-year veteran of the music business, Borealis recording artist MOSE SCARLETT has a rich bass-baritone voice, an intricate finger-picking guitar style, and a penchant for the 'good old tunes'. With his entertaining blend of Blues, Jazz, Ragtime, and 'Tin Pan Alley Treasures' [1900-1940], he has performed all over Canada and the U.S., and made 26 tours overseas [United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, and Australia]. Grizzled yet verging on elegance, deadpan yet bordering on hilarity, songster Mose Scarlett is truly one of a kind -- We're thrilled to have him back with us this season!
...a voice of Robeson depth, Glencoe cragginess, and kitchen-range warmth ... lending the authentic ring of the ancients with his own original stamp, and much spontaneous repartee... [Glasgow Herald]

October 29: The Echo Hunters
Favourite sons of the Montreal folk-roots circuit -- dynamic vocal harmonies and deep soul grooves.
The Echo Hunters feature the collective writing and performing talent of longtime friends Larry Cassini (lead guitar, vocals, bass, harmonica), Gordie Fleming (lead vocals, 12-string guitar, harmonica) and Rob Couture (drums, percussion), plus additional members of the collective : Kirk Fontaine (vocals, guitars, and more…), Carl Rufh (vocals, bass), and Sylvain Dancausse (violin). The band has played concerts and festivals from Montréal, Québec to Yosemite, California; Vancouver Island, British Columbia to Lunenberg, Nova Scotia, as well as clubs and showcases throughout North America (NxNE, Folk Alliance, and more). Along the way, they have opened for and backed UK rootsman Jim Condie, roots darling Penny Lang, bluesman Rob Lutes, most recently touring in Ontario and Québec with the UK’s Chris Jagger’s Atcha (brother of the brother).
Their shows have become the stuff of legend… Like the best southern barbecue, the best music often benefits from long, slow cooking … Cabin Fever, a collection of masterful folk-country-blues originals… has already scored major rave reviews and lots of airplay [Greg Quill, Toronto Star]

November 26: Hotcha!
Born in the swamp. Raised on the mountain. Worked in the mines. Play on the porch.
Well, that's only true metaphorically... They don't actually have a porch. Hotcha! (Beverly Kreller and Howard Druckman) nonetheless feel as though their music fits the description: Rustic, rural songs of work and faith, delivered with a vintage vibe and the energy of a runaway train. Hotcha! creates a distinctive musical blend of old-time western, bluegrass, early swing and country gospel. If you could take a picture of Hotcha!'s music, it would be a grainy, sepia-toned portrait of depression-era musicians with nothing but an old Sears-Roebuck guitar and a nickel in hand for the jitney dance. If you listen to Hotcha!'s music, you'll hear a unique combination of accordion and bodhran (Celtic drum) alongside gritty guitar, wailing harmonica and soaring vocal harmonies.
...genuine enthusiasm and infectious energy. They’re having fun — just listen to Kreller’s clucking on 'Ol Man Mose,' or the free-spirited kazoo solo that follows, and try not to smile …! Or take 'Foie Gras (Dance Of The Fatted Ducks),' a romping ditty that sounds as though it’s been plucked straight from the farm... if time’s all you’ve got to spend, listening to HOTCHA! is a fine way to spend it …! January 28: Small World Project
Integrating pure "world" elements, classical music and jazz. Small is beautiful!
Drawing its inspiration from the four corners of the globe, the trio’s music vibrates with Brazilian samba beats, Chilean folklore, flamenco Andalou, Hawaiian Island melodies, and the musical strains of Morocco, Senegal and India — with some good old American bluegrass in the mix.
Lots of inventiveness, lots of new sounds - an acoustic project of great interest. [Andre Rheaume, Espace Musique, Radio Canada]

March 25: Jon Brooks
2010: International Songwriting Competition winner; Kerrville New Folk Competition winner; Toronto Star's annual "People to Watch"
In Jon’s words, “ultimately, the folk singer is trying to politicize love – to lobby for compassion to be our principle representative in government office.” In 2009, his third CD, Moth Nor Rust earned him his second Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for ‘Best Songwriter’. We’re so happy to have him return!
Jon Brooks stands among an exalted few in the enduring Canadian song tradition -- Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Fred Eaglesmith, Bruce Cockburn -- as a lyricist, composer and performer with a fierce commitment to his craft and his vision. [Toronto Star]

April 29: Maria Dunn and John Wort Hannam
Two Folk Society favourites, one incredible double bill!
Two of Canada’s best storytellers in song, Maria and John join forces for what promises to be a fabulous show. Maria was nominated for Solo Artist of the Year at the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards, and John was recently a third-time Grand Prize winner at the Calgary Folk Music Festival Songwriting Competition.
…remarkable singer-songwriter, think of [Maria Dunn] as a distaff Woody Guthrie. [Mike Ross, Edmonton Sun]
Listening to John play songs such as Wrecking Ball, Infantryman, and Sweet Sweet Rose, it is no wonder he is one of Canada's most promising folk musicians.. [Mike Laba, Toronto Unplugged]

Beautiful renditions of traditional and original songs and tunes.
Vinyl Café Host, Stuart McLean has described Allison as having “a beautiful, clear singing voice …and the ability to tell a story with her flute.” Allison and her band mates entrance listeners with their exquisite vocal harmonies and captivating arrangements highlighting flute, fiddle, guitar, accordion, mandolin, banjo and acoustic bass.
Allison is a wonderful singer. … The band's sophisticated arrangements surround Allison's voice and flute like a warm blanket on a cold winter night. [Tom Druckenmiller, Sing Out!]
